Choosing Good Keywords To Optimise

Many keywords are good to optimise, but they are not necessarily the most obvious ones. Say you run a website selling televisions. If you try an optimise your website to index for televisions you are going to come up against so much competition that your site will take several years to get optimised for these keywords. This is not to say you should not go for these more competitive keywords eventually, but it is best to go for the easier ones first.

There are many long tail keywords that can still bring substantial traffic to your website and these keywords are much easier and quicker to get a site listed under which is either new or at least new to being optimised.

With search engine optimisation your first job is to research which keywords you would like to optimise your site for. You need a balance between keywords which are not to competitive and keywords which still get a reasonable amount of searches each month.

So how are you going to find out this information. Well you can find out how many searches are done via Yahoo and the rest of the search engines on the Overture network for various keywords by going to this site http://inventory.overture.com. Then you can times the result of the number of visits by 8 and this is about the number of visitors you can expect to get on Google for these keywords.

The tool is very simple to use. You simply go to the url and then type in the keyword you would initially think of. So for search engine optimisation you would type in exactly that. Then it will come up with the number of visits on the overture network for this keyphrase and many other similar ones for the month previous.

Once you have found some keywords which you feel get a reasonable number of visits you can then click Google and type in some of your chosen keywords to see how well optimised the sites are that are listed at the top of these keywords. You want to find keywords with websites of under page rank 6. There are many other articles on choosing great keywords. Type in the search into Google and read up on the subject.
