Spider Stoppers

There are many things within your site that can prevent search engine spiders from crawling your site. Here are some of them.

  • Get rid of jump menus – if you have jump menus, either get rid of them or add alternate methods for your site to be explored. Jump menus are search engine spider blockers – they will never find your content if this is the only way it can be found.
  • Keep your parameters simple – if you have a database driven website with long query strings, the spiders may have problems searching through your site.
  • Don’t introduce session ids as soon as your site is opened – if your site uses session ids at times other than when a purchase is made, the spiders will reject your links because they will believe the same pages are appearing but with new addresses.

Unfortunately, each of these roadblocks are common with websites and each will cause you to have terrible search engine rankings. The experts at Kjell Web Design know how to avoid these pitfalls and how to check your existing site for any of these problems.

If you want to check on your site yourself, you can run a site command on Google, Yahoo, and MSN by typing site: followed by the address of your website. This will bring up a list of all of the pages the search engine has indexed from your site. If only a few pages are showing up, you probably are having some issues with the search engine’s spiders. If this is the case, contact us at Kjell Web Design and let us resolve the problem for you.
