Spider Stoppers

Now that you have built your website, it is time for the web traffic to start flowing in, right? The unfortunate reality is that it takes more than just building a site to draw in visitors. The search engines need to know about your site and they need to be able to find it. For these reasons, you need to be certain to follow a few guidelines when creating your site.

  • Give the search engine spiders a way in – you can do this by adding links to your website on other websites and reputable sources.
  • Make sure there is something interesting and meaningful on your website for the spiders to see – if the spider is only able to see the frameset, it might not be able to read the content. The same is true of Flash files, which can prevent the spiders from finding anything useful on your site. Or, the spider might determine that the content on your site was pulled off of another site and will pass right over it.
  • Let the spider search your entire website – if you have buttons made from Flash, your human visitors can click on them and visit other areas of your site, but the spiders can’t. Certain forms of JavaScript also make it difficult for the spiders to explore your site. So, make sure humans and spiders can both explore your site freely.
